The fact that the room used as the office is located in the center of the library can cause some problems as the students are reluctant to go through it or use the computers in it.
\n In order to accomplish this I plan on going through and weeding the large collection of professional development materials that the media center has acquired, many of which are outdated and have not been used in many years. I also plan to reorganize the way that book wrapping is done by finding a location that can be used solely for this activity so that student desk space is not taken up. The space that is freed up I plan to use in order to display portions of the collection in order to reduce the use of high shelf space that can be difficult for younger students to reach.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"17106433","body":"I wonder if book wrapping could exist in a kit format so it could be done in multiple places. Part of this is migrating links and resources from an older site no longer used, and part is coming up with new content that teachers, parents and students would find useful. Since I have been obsessed with comics in the classroom this semester, I would like to focus on how the site can address this subject. However, the basic services and policies of the library are all there and easy to find.
\n
\nThere are some benefits of using a Google site for this project. One is making an up-to-date calendar available for public viewing (it's linked to the library's Gmail address). Adding links is extremely easy, and the navigation is pre-formatted and makes sense.
\n
\nThere are a couple of challenges to the project as well. The largest of these is that it's hard to tell whether the site would actually be used. From what I've gathered, teachers from the 2 schools the library serves are not always responsive to online communication or excited about using computers on a regular basis.
\n
\nI think that the library could promote the site by using it regularly as a tool for lessons, newsletters, professional development, teacher collaboration, etc. It seems like simply providing a service isn't enough; you need to actively advocate for it, and use it yourself in the course of regular work.
\n
\nAny thoughts? I'd be interested to hear if others are asking patrons about web resources (maybe even sending out surveys asking parents\/teachers\/students what they'd like to see or want to use on a school library site?)

\nIs the Google site public? I'd love to check out the layout and resources you've selected so far, if you're open to it.
\n
\nI don't know enough about your school or the relationship between library and subject teachers, but maybe part of your project could be preparing a memo that advertises the new and improved web site, or presenting it to them in person?
\n
\nDo teachers communicate electronically for other purposes (like all-staff notifications, for example)? Maybe you could send out an emailed notification about the site, highlighting a couple especially useful resources.
\n
\nOr do any teachers have their own web sites for their individual classes? My school's teachers do, and I've tried to market the library web site to students as the one-stop shop for all of their teachers' sites. No need to remember any url other than the library's. :)
\n
\nI haven't given a formal survey about what students\/teachers would like to see on the library site, but I have asked both groups in person (during the school day and at staff meetings), and I remind both groups that I can add any especially helpful links, at any time, in a few seconds. I've been adding links relating to a specific project, and introducing the links to the class within a lesson.

Final Project Idea","description":"
\nAt PS 6, the students are constantly asking for recommendations. With just one LMS and 850 students, it is difficult task to keep up with.
\n
\nSo my project is based in the kids acting as their own readers advisory.
\n
\nI am going to introduce a Fifth grade class to writing a persuasive book review, almost in the same vein as a book talk. They will focus on the main plot, characters, and what really stands out about the book making it a good read.
\n
\nOnce they have their book reviews, the class is going to read them to each other as a sort of audition. The winning five reviews will be turned into podcasts and (hopefully, with the administrations permission) posted to the library website.
\n
\nI was going to add a component of writing the reviews on the website Shelfari, but I am unsure of the logistics of doing this in our space.

Like in my library--though I don't subscribe to all the bells and whistles they can afford--the full potential of the software hasn't yet been met.
\n
\nWe decided that my project will involve a combination of the following:
\n- researching Destiny's services
\n- familiarizing myself with Destiny's functions
\n- contacting Destiny with questions when necessary - determining which services best meet the needs and interests of my LMSs and Collegiate students
\n- designing Collegiate's Destiny home page
\n- linking the new home page to the existing library web sites
\n- determining a way to best advertise\/utilize the new and improved Destiny services
\n
\nAs I do more Destiny research--which is likely to involve a webinar--I will know better what services Collegiate will benefit from, and how best to implement those new services.
